Wolfgangsee – In the Footsteps of Travelers combines landscape, memory, and personal history into a cinematic portrait of a unique region. The fictional portion of the film takes up documentary themes and develops them into a narrative about origins, family, and a personal search for one’s roots. Childhood memories, regional history, and contemporary encounters intertwine to create a multifaceted view of Lake Wolfgang.
The film takes viewers to significant locations around the lake—particularly St. Gilgen and Strobl—and introduces people whose lives are closely tied to the region. Historical tales, such as the legend of Saint Wolfgang, intersect with living traditions. Among these are the Glöckler, whose traditional procession on the last Rauhnacht remains firmly rooted in regional culture to this day.
The Schafbergbahn and the Wolfgangsee Schifffahrt also play a central role. For generations, they have shaped the way people travel through and experience the region. The railway offers a bird’s-eye view of the landscape, while the boat tour allows visitors to experience the lake as a link between places, people, and memories.
The result is a film about movement and origins, about memories that linger in places, and about the traces people leave behind in a landscape.
